What is a mosquito bollard?
A mosquito bollard is a device that attracts and captures adult mosquitoes. Most mosquito traps, with the exception of egg-laying traps, target females seeking blood to develop their eggs. Attracted to the trap, they are then sucked in by a fan and perish by dehydration within a few hours. Mosquito bollards should only be installed outdoors.
How does a mosquito bollard work?
A mosquito bollard is a trap that works on the principle of biomimicry. It mimics human presence by copying our breathing and body odors thanks to a bottle of CO₂ and an odorant attractant. Mosquitoes are thus attracted to the trap, sucked in and captured in the nets. This type of device therefore drastically reduces the nuisance by limiting the proliferation of mosquitoes. Most anti-mosquito bollards can be plugged into the mains.
To ensure optimum capture of mosquitoes, it is essential to position the trap correctly. It should be installed close to a mosquito resting area, i.e. in a shady, wind-protected spot, close to vegetation and damp. In addition, a suitable distance should be maintained between the trap and the living zone, ideally between 5 and 8 meters from it.
An anti-mosquito bollard must operate continuously throughout the season. It must remain connected 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as it is a basic treatment designed to significantly reduce the mosquito population.
To maximize the effectiveness of an anti-mosquito bollard, it's essential to take preventive measures before using it. These measures are designed to prevent the development of larvae in your garden:
- Eliminate sources of stagnant water by regularly emptying plant bowls and checking areas likely to retain water, such as your patio.
- Maintain your garden regularly by collecting leaves from under trees and fallen fruit, as mosquitoes feed on nectar/sugar.
- Clean your eavestroughs at least once a year in spring, to prevent water build-up.
- Cover rainwater tanks with mosquito nets or equivalent devices
- Encourage biodiversity by introducing fish and frogs into decorative basins and fountains
- Keep your pool water clear at all times
These preventive measures are an effective way of reducing nuisance.
Is the Ma Boite à Moustique trap environmentally friendly?
Yes, our trap works on the basis of biomimicry. It emits a small amount of CO₂, equivalent to that of our breathing, and diffuses an odorant attractant that mimics our body odors. This targeted method preserves biodiversity by attracting only mosquitoes without impacting other insects. Ma Boite à Moustique is an alternative to chemical sprays.
What's more, our patented technology enables the trap to detect external conditions to automatically adapt CO₂ diffusion according to the mosquito's life cycle. Our mosquito bollard offers maximum efficiency for the lowest carbon impact.
Finally, thanks to our partnership with Gaz de Ferme and L2PI, we offer our customers refills of biosourced CO₂ produced by agricultural methanization. This natural process transforms organic waste into biomethane. Biomethane has the same characteristics as natural gas, with the added advantage of being 100% renewable.
